Department Head Position
Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics
Drexel University

The Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department at Drexel University (www.mem.drexel.edu) invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head. We are a rising department with growth in world-class research, new and renovated facilities, and a continued reputation for educating outstanding engineers. We are thus seeking a dynamic and innovative leader who will continue to advance the department toward greater national prominence. Candidates should have a record of excellence in funded research and scholarship and be qualified for appointment as a tenured full professor in Mechanical Engineering. Strong interpersonal and administrative skills are essential, since the department head will need to work effectively with a broad range of constituencies, including faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, industry representatives, and public and private funding agencies.

The MEM Department is rapidly expanding in people, research, and resources. The department has hired 8 faculty over the past 5 years, expanding the department to 26 tenured and tenure-track and 11 affiliated faculty. We have invigorated our traditional areas of mechanics, systems and thermal fluid sciences and advanced into the areas of biomechanical engineering, manufacturing, nanotechnology, and control systems and robotics. As a testament to this growth, research expenditures have increased five fold over the past five years. Our graduate students have earned 15 national fellowships, and the department holds GAANN fellowships for additional student support. Many of our faculty enjoy research space in the new Bossone Research Enterprise Center, a 150,000 ft2 state-of-the-art complex designed by I.M. Pei.

The MEM department is committed to providing an excellent learning experience for our 600 undergraduate and nearly 100 graduate students. The majority of our undergraduates participate in our pioneering co-op program to gain extensive real-world experience before graduation. The Drexel College of Engineering is a national leader in engineering education, with the third largest private engineering program in the country and an undergraduate curriculum widely recognized for its excellence and innovation.

Drexel University was founded in 1891 by A.J. Drexel as an institution of higher learning uniquely suited to the needs of a rapidly growing industrial society.
