Greetings and thank you for visiting Drexel University's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) website. It is a great time to study mechanical engineering. In a recent survey of employers by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, mechanical engineering tops the list of majors that are in most demand; (please see http://www.jobweb.com/joboutlook/2006/default.htm).
You can also find out more about professional opportunities in mechanical engineering by visiting (http://www.careercornerstone.org/mecheng/mecheng.htm).
This website describes the many activities that define our commitment to the academic enterprise. In these pages, you’ll read about our efforts to build strong foundations in curriculum development to reflect evolving technologies, externally funded research programs, scholarly activities of the highest value, and an inviting community of students, faculty, and staff.
This is a very exciting time in the MEM Department at Drexel University; 7 of our Ph.D. graduates recently received faculty positions at the University of Texas, University of Oklahoma, George Fox University, College of New Jersey, University of Arkansas, Middle East Technical University, and King Mongkut University. At the undergraduate level, we welcomed more than 150 freshmen to our program. The faculty members continue to excel in scholarly activities that lead to competitive grants and archival articles. In the areas of plasma science, tissue mechanics and engineering, and autonomous systems, we are gaining international recognition for research and training.
This fall, we welcomed Dr. James Tangorra to the department as a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in robotics and bio-inspired design. Professor Tangorra received his Ph.D. from MIT. In September 2008, we will be welcoming Dr. Ani Hsieh as a tenure-track Assistant Professor as well. Professor Hsieh received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and her research is centered in systems/controls and robotics. Together they will strengthen our growing robotics program in the department.
We are looking forward to another exciting year in 2008! In the meantime, we wish you a pleasant visit to our departmental website and please come back often.
With best regards,
Alan Lau, Ph.D.
